Debra Ann Wilhite disappeared from the Evansville, Indiana, area on October 16, 1974, at the age of 19. She lived in nearby Gibson County with her husband and their two young daughters while working as a waitress at the Windmill Restaurant, a truck stop located near the junction of Highways 41 and 57. Before reporting to work that evening, she dropped her children off with family as planned.
According to co-workers, Debra completed her shift without incident. Shortly before closing, an unfamiliar man entered the restaurant and told her he had hitchhiked to the area on a cattle truck. Claiming he needed transportation to a local motel, he asked Debra for a ride. Witnesses later recalled seeing the two speaking before she left work, although accounts differed on whether they appeared to know one another. Debra departed in her green 1966 Ford Galaxie and was never seen again. Neither she nor her vehicle has ever been located.
Over the years, investigators have considered numerous leads and theories. One persistent rumor suggested Debra's vehicle may have been submerged in a flooded strip mine known locally as "The Duck Pond" near Elberfeld, Indiana. By the time the location became a focus of interest, it had already been drained and filled, leaving no way to verify the claim.
At the time she disappeared, Debra was only 19 years old. Her husband later stated she may have been pregnant, although that has never been confirmed publicly. More than five decades later, her disappearance remains unsolved, and investigators continue to seek information that could explain what happened after she left work that October evening.
