Seventeen-year-old Craig Allen Frear disappeared from Scotia, New York, on June 27, 2004. Craig was a junior at Scotia-Glenville High School and played soccer for both his school and the Black Watch Soccer Club. He lived with his family in Glenville and had been employed at a local Price Chopper supermarket.
On the morning of his disappearance, Craig’s parents learned that he had stopped reporting to work several weeks earlier. His mother spoke with him by phone and asked him to come home. Craig indicated that he would be there shortly, but never arrived.
Craig had been visiting someone at the Cambridge Manor apartment complex on Washington Avenue in Scotia. His father later saw Craig’s vehicle parked outside the complex. At approximately 2:00 p.m., witnesses saw Craig walking away from the apartments and entering a wooded area near the railroad tracks. The route could have led toward his family’s home, which was reportedly only a short walk away. Craig has not been seen since.
Craig was officially reported missing on July 2, 2004, after his family spent several days contacting friends and searching for him. Nearly 70 searches have since been conducted in the woods, along the railroad corridor, near places he regularly visited and in surrounding waterways. Police have used search dogs, boats and divers, but no confirmed trace of Craig has been located.
In 2021, New York State Police disclosed that they were evaluating a possible sighting from the period between Craig’s disappearance and the filing of the missing-person report. A former coworker believed he had seen Craig sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle stopped at the intersection of State Route 50 and Sheffield Road in Glenville. The witness could not provide identifying information about the vehicle, and authorities have not announced that the sighting was confirmed.
Craig had little money with him, and investigators reported in 2021 that his Social Security number had never been used following his disappearance. Police have not publicly established whether he encountered an accident, left voluntarily or was the victim of foul play. New York State Police continue to investigate his disappearance.
